An air fryer and a convection oven do almost the same thing: they cook with hot air that a fan pushes around. The difference is mostly size and how strong the airflow is for the space. That one difference explains why an air fryer feels faster and why a convection oven holds more.
This guide compares the two in plain terms. The air fryer figures come from product listings we reviewed for our roundups, and we have not used these machines ourselves, so treat them as listing numbers and confirm on the product page.
What Each One Is
- Air fryer: a compact appliance, usually with a basket or a small cavity, that circulates hot air quickly around food.
- Convection oven: an oven with a fan, either full size or a countertop model. It circulates hot air, but through a much bigger space.
Side by Side
| Feature | Air fryer | Convection oven |
|---|---|---|
| Cooking space | About 2 to 14 quarts for baskets and small ovens | A countertop model is around 0.5 to 1 cubic foot; a full-size oven is several cubic feet |
| Airflow for the space | Strong fan in a small cavity | Gentler airflow in a bigger cavity |
| Preheat | Short, because the cavity is small | Longer |
| Best for | Fries, wings, vegetables, reheating | Sheet pans, roasts, baking |
| Counter space | Small to medium | Medium for countertop; none for a built-in oven |
The Numbers From Real Listings
Dimensions are depth by width by height in inches as shown in each listing.
| Model | Type | Capacity | Wattage | Size |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ninja AF101 | Basket air fryer | 4 qt | 1,550 W | 13.6 x 11 x 13.3 |
| Chefman 9 Qt TurboFry | Basket air fryer | 9 qt | 1,750 W | 15.75 x 11.81 x 11.42 |
| Cuisinart air fryer toaster oven | Countertop convection oven | 0.6 cu ft | 1,800 W | 12.25 x 15.75 x 13.75 |
A countertop convection oven with an air fry mode takes about the same floor space as a large basket air fryer, but the cavity is shaped for pans, not for a basket of food. At 0.6 cubic feet it works out to roughly 18 quarts by our arithmetic (one cubic foot is about 30 quarts), though racks and gaps mean the usable space is smaller.
Where an Air Fryer Wins
- Speed: the small cavity heats quickly.
- Crisping: strong airflow around a single layer of food.
- Cleanup: baskets and trays are removable, and many listings mention dishwasher-safe parts.
Where a Convection Oven Wins
- Capacity: sheet pans, big roasts and multiple racks.
- Baking: a larger flat cavity suits cookies and bread.
- Flexibility: one appliance for many jobs.
Is a Convection Oven With Air Fry the Same Thing?
Close. Many countertop convection ovens now add an air fry mode and a basket. They sit between the two types: more space than a basket, a stronger fan than a plain oven. See our guide to the best air fryer toaster ovens for examples.
Power and Circuits
The three models above list 1,550 to 1,800 watts. A standard 15 amp, 120 volt circuit tops out around 1,800 watts, so either type can trip a breaker if you run a kettle or microwave on the same circuit.
Which Should You Choose?
- If you cook fries, wings and leftovers, choose an air fryer.
- If you bake, roast and use sheet pans, use a convection oven, or a countertop oven with air fry.
- If you have both a full-size oven and little counter space, an air fryer adds speed without much room.
Common Mistakes
- Expecting an air fryer basket to hold a full sheet pan.
- Expecting a convection oven to crisp like a basket air fryer in the same time.
- Ignoring the counter space a countertop oven needs.
- Running two high-wattage appliances on one circuit.
Air Fryer vs Convection Oven FAQ
Is an air fryer just a small convection oven?
In principle, yes. It uses the same hot-air idea in a smaller space with a stronger fan for that space.
Can I bake in an air fryer?
You can bake small items, but a convection oven offers more room and a flatter cavity.
Can a convection oven air fry?
It can crisp food with hot air, but the result depends on the fan and on spreading food on a rack. Models with an air fry mode are designed for it.
The Short Version
Choose an air fryer for speed and crisp snacks. Choose a convection oven for pans and roasts. If you want both in one appliance, look at an air fryer toaster oven, and measure your counter first.
