Most air fryers use between about 900 and 1,800 watts while heating. That is a lot for a kitchen appliance, as much as a hair dryer or a space heater at the high end, and it is why people trip breakers when they run an air fryer next to a kettle or microwave.
This guide collects the wattage listed for popular models, converts it to amps, and explains how to avoid overloading a circuit. The wattage figures come from product listings we reviewed, and we have not measured any machine ourselves. This is general information, not electrical advice, so ask an electrician if you have repeated breaker trips.
The Basic Math
Amps equal watts divided by volts. US household circuits run at 120 volts, so:
| Appliance wattage | Current at 120 V |
|---|---|
| 900 W | 7.5 A |
| 1,500 W | 12.5 A |
| 1,700 W | about 14.2 A |
| 1,800 W | 15 A |
A 15 amp circuit therefore tops out at about 1,800 watts, and a 20 amp circuit at about 2,400 watts. Kitchen counter outlets in many US homes are on 20 amp circuits, but older homes and non-kitchen outlets often are not. Check your breaker panel.
Wattage of Popular Air Fryers
Figures are as shown in each listing. Amps are our own arithmetic (watts divided by 120).
| Type | Model | Wattage | Amps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small basket | Cosori Lite 2.1 Qt | 900 W | 7.5 |
| Small basket | Chefman 2 Qt Mini | 900 W | 7.5 |
| Small basket | BLACK+DECKER Purifry 2QT | 1,000 W | 8.3 |
| Small basket | Instant Vortex Mini 2 QT | 1,300 W | 10.8 |
| Small basket | Chefman 4 QT with window | 1,500 W | 12.5 |
| Basket | Ninja AF101 4 Qt | 1,550 W | 12.9 |
| Basket | Instant Pot 10 Qt 7-in-1 | 1,500 W | 12.5 |
| Basket | Dash Compact | 1,650 W | 13.8 |
| Large basket | Instant Vortex Plus 6 Qt | 1,700 W | 14.2 |
| Large basket | Chefman 8 Qt TurboFry | 1,700 W | 14.2 |
| Large basket | Ninja AF181 6.5 Qt | 1,750 W | 14.6 |
| Large basket | Chefman 9 Qt | 1,750 W | 14.6 |
| Large basket | Ninja EzView Max XL | 1,800 W | 15.0 |
| Dual basket | Ninja Foodi DZ201 / DZ401 | 1,690 W | 14.1 |
| Dual basket | Chefman TurboFry 9 Qt Dual | 1,700 W | 14.2 |
| Dual basket | Cosori Dual 9 QT | 1,750 W | 14.6 |
| Oven style | Emeril Lagasse 26QT | 1,700 W | 14.2 |
| Oven style | Cuisinart air fryer toaster oven | 1,800 W | 15.0 |
| Oven style | Cosori Air Fryer Oven 13 QT | 1,800 W | 15.0 |
| Oven style | Instant Pot Omni Plus 19 Qt | 1,800 W | 15.0 |
The pattern is that bigger machines use more, but even a small air fryer rated 1,500 watts draws 12.5 amps, which is close to the limit of a 15 amp circuit by itself.
Why Breakers Trip
- Two high-wattage appliances at once: an air fryer at 1,700 W plus a 1,000 W microwave is about 2,700 W, over both a 15 amp and a 20 amp circuit.
- Shared outlets: several outlets can sit on one breaker.
- Extension cords and power strips: avoid them for high-wattage appliances.
How to Avoid Tripping a Breaker
- Plug the air fryer directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip.
- Do not run it with a microwave, kettle, toaster or space heater on the same circuit.
- If your breaker trips, move the air fryer to a different circuit.
- If it keeps happening, ask an electrician to check the circuit.
Does Wattage Mean It Cooks Better?
Not directly. Higher wattage heats faster and holds temperature under load, but design and airflow matter too. Compare wattage together with capacity and footprint, which our roundups list.
Cost to Run
An air fryer draws full power only while the heating element is on, and cook times are usually short. The cost of one meal is small. If you want an exact figure, multiply the kilowatts by the hours of use and by your electric rate.
Wattage FAQ
Is 1,500 watts a lot for an air fryer?
It is typical. Many baskets and small models fall between 1,500 and 1,800 watts.
Can I use an extension cord?
Avoid it unless the cord is rated for the load. A direct wall outlet is safest.
Do dual-basket air fryers draw more?
The listings above show about 1,690 to 1,750 watts, similar to large single baskets.
Does a smaller air fryer use less?
Often, but not always. The 2-quart models above range from 900 to 1,650 watts.
The Short Version
Most air fryers use 1,500 to 1,800 watts, which is 12.5 to 15 amps. Keep them on a circuit of their own, and do not run a microwave or kettle at the same time. For models by size, see our guides to the best small and large air fryers.
