An evaporative cooler, also called a swamp cooler, pulls air across a water-soaked pad and blows it out with a fan. Unlike a plain fan it needs water and, unlike a compressor air conditioner, it needs no vent hose. Makers describe them as best suited to dry air, and they add moisture to the room.

The six coolers below range from a 6.7 inch USB desk unit to a 290 pound commercial cooler. Specs come from each product’s listing page, and we flag where listings disagree. We have not used these coolers ourselves. CFM, coverage and noise figures are the makers’ own, and we make no promises about how much any of them will cool a room.

What to Look For

Feature Why it matters
Tank size A larger tank means fewer refills; a hose hookup can feed some units
Airflow (CFM) The maker’s figure for the fan, not a measure of cooling
Size and weight Desk, floor and wheeled units suit different spaces
Controls Knob, buttons, touch, remote or app
Upkeep Pads and tanks need regular cleaning and drying

Care and Setup

  • Unplug the unit before filling, moving or cleaning it.

  • Choosing a large commercial unit for a small room.
  • Skipping pad cleaning.

Evaporative Cooler FAQ

Does it need a window or a vent hose?

The listings here describe no venting; the units use water and a fan.

How does it differ from a fan?

A fan only moves air, while these units also use a water tank and an evaporative pad or cartridge.
