How to Reduce Refrigerator Noise: Common Sounds and Fixes

Many refrigerator sounds are normal, and the ones that annoy you can often be reduced by levelling the cabinet, giving it breathing room and clearing loose items nearby. Work through the checks below from easiest to hardest, and read the maker’s guide for sounds specific to your model.

Sounds You May Hear

Sound Common cause What to try
Low hum Compressor or fan running Usually normal; check level
Clicking Controls switching on or off Usually normal
Gurgling Liquid moving in lines Usually normal
Rattle Loose items or contact with a wall Move items, add space
Buzzing Vibration against cabinets Level and re-position

Quick Checks First

  1. Listen closely to find where the noise comes from. Put your ear near the back, the base and the doors in turn.
  2. Remove bottles, jars and containers from the door shelves and see if the rattle stops.
  3. Check that the cabinet does not touch a wall or neighbouring cabinet. Leave the gap the manual suggests.
  4. Look at the drip tray under the unit, if there is one, to see that it sits firmly in place.

Level the Cabinet

An uneven cabinet is a common reason for vibration. Use a spirit level on top and adjust the front feet in small turns. A cabinet that rests firmly on all of its feet transmits less hum to the floor.

Reduce Vibration Through the Floor

  • Place a firm rubber or anti-vibration mat under the feet if the manual allows it.
  • Avoid soft foam, which can let the unit shift.
  • On a hollow wooden floor, noise may carry more. A mat helps spread the load.

Keep the Back Clear

Dust on the coils can make the fan work harder and sound louder. Unplug the appliance, then brush and vacuum the coils gently as the manual describes. A clean, uncluttered back also allows heat to leave.

When to Call for Help

Loud banging, grinding, burning smells or a sound that keeps getting worse deserve a professional look. Use a licensed technician for any electrical or sealed-system work, and never open sealed parts yourself.

Keep a Sound Diary

If a sound worries you, note when it happens, how long it lasts and what the unit was doing. This helps a technician and also shows whether the noise follows a pattern, such as after a door is opened.

FAQ

Is it normal for a refrigerator to be louder after a delivery?

Yes, it can be. The unit may need to settle, and the cabinet may need levelling. Check the manual for how long to wait.

Does a full refrigerator sound different?

Often it does. Contents can dampen some noises, while an almost empty unit can echo.

The Short Version

Learn which sounds are normal, then level the cabinet, clear loose items, leave space around the sides and keep the coils clean. For anything unusual, follow the manual and call a licensed technician.
