Storing Holiday Decorations: Bins, Labels and Packing Tips

Holiday items last longer and are easier to find when you pack them by category into labeled bins, protect fragile pieces, and store everything in a dry, temperature-stable place. Do the packing in the same order every year.

Sort While You Take Things Down

The easiest moment to sort is when you pull items off the tree and walls. As each piece comes down, decide: keep, repair, or let go. Chipped ornaments, tangled lights that no longer work, and duplicates can leave now. This stops you from storing items you will not use.

Pack by Category

  1. Wrap each fragile ornament in tissue or soft cloth, then place it in a divided box or a cup of an egg-style tray.
  2. Wind light strings around a flat piece of cardboard or a reel, fasten the plug end with a tie, and check the cord for damage. Follow the maker’s instructions for any electrical item, and do not use damaged cords.
  3. Store wreaths in a wide, shallow box or a hanging bag so they keep their shape.
  4. Keep fabric items, such as stockings and table linens, together in a breathable bag.
  5. Place tree skirts and garlands on top, since they are light.

Choose the Right Bin

Item Container Sizing check
Small ornaments Divided ornament box Cell depth matches ornament size
Light strings Reel or flat bin Cord length and plug size
Wreaths Wide shallow box Wreath diameter
Artificial tree Tall bag or the original box Folded height

Label and Place the Bins

Write the holiday and the contents on two sides of each bin so you can read them when stacked. Use one color of lid per holiday if you celebrate several. Stack heavier bins at the bottom and keep the total stack at a height you can safely lift from.

Choose a spot that stays dry and does not swing sharply between hot and cold. Many attics and sheds do, so a closet shelf or under-bed space is often kinder to delicate pieces. If you do use a garage, raise the bins off the floor.

Keep a one-page list taped inside the lid of the top bin that names each container and what it holds. At unpacking time, you can find the lights or the table items in moments, and you will know at a glance whether anything went missing. Add a note on any piece that needs repair so you can fix it before the next season.

FAQ

How can I stop lights from tangling?

Wrap them around a spool or cardboard right away, and keep the bulbs tucked inside the wrap.

Is one big bin enough?

Usually not. Several medium bins are lighter to carry and easier to sort.

The Short Version

Sort as you take things down, wrap fragile items, and pack by category in sturdy labeled bins. Store them in a dry, steady spot and stack heavy ones at the bottom.
