How to Measure Windows for Curtains: Width, Drop and Rod Spot

To measure for curtains, decide where the rod will go, measure the rod length for width, then measure from the rod down to where you want the hem for the drop. Write every number down before you shop.

What You Need

  • A metal tape measure (cloth tapes can stretch).
  • Pencil and paper.
  • A stable step stool or sturdy ladder, used on level ground.
  • A helper for long spans, if possible.

Step-by-Step Measuring

  1. Choose the rod position. Many people set it above the window frame and extend it past each side so panels clear the glass when open.
  2. Measure the window frame width. Then add the extra you want on each side to find the rod length.
  3. Work out total fabric width. Multiply rod length by the fullness you like. A common range is 1.5 to 2 times for gentle folds.
  4. Divide by panel count. If you use two panels, split the total between them and check the label for each panel width.
  5. Measure the drop. From the top of the rod (or the rings, if used) to the target hem spot.
  6. Subtract or add for the heading. Rod pocket panels hang from the rod, while ring clips add a little length.
  7. Check twice. Take each measurement a second time in a different spot, since walls and floors are rarely perfectly level.

Choosing the Hem Position

Hem style Where it ends Note
Sill length At the windowsill Good where furniture sits below
Apron length A little below the sill Covers the trim
Floor clearance Just above the floor Easy to keep clean
Floor-skimming or puddle Touching or pooling Needs a few extra inches of fabric

Notes for Tricky Windows

For a bay or corner window, measure each section on its own and consider separate rods. For sliding doors, allow enough space beside the opening so panels can stack clear of the track. Always check whether the wall can hold a bracket where you plan to mount it.

Worksheet to Copy Down

  • Window frame width: ______ and height: ______
  • Rod length (frame width plus both side extensions): ______
  • Fullness multiplier: ______ and total fabric width: ______
  • Number of panels and width per panel: ______
  • Rod height from the floor and chosen hem drop: ______
  • Obstacles nearby, such as radiators, furniture or switches: ______

Keep this list with you when you shop so that every size on a label can be checked against your own figures. If a panel is only sold in a fixed length, choose the next longer size and plan to adjust the hem rather than buying one that falls short.

FAQ

Do I measure inside or outside the frame?

For curtains, measure the rod position outside the frame, since the rod normally sits outside the window opening.

What if the panel is slightly too long?

Hems can often be shortened with tape or stitching; keep spare fabric until you are happy.

The Short Version

Set the rod spot, calculate width using fullness, measure the drop to your chosen hem, and write it all down. Double-check before ordering.
