How to Choose Lamp Shades That Fit Your Lamp and Room

A good lamp shade matches the base in width, height and shape, and it fits the bulb and harp without touching either. Measure the base first, then work through the fitter, the material and the room. This guide walks through each decision in order.

Measure the Base Before Anything Else

Shade size is the step most people get wrong, and it is easy to check with a tape measure and a sheet of paper.

  1. Measure the height of the lamp body from the table to the top of the socket area.
  2. Measure the widest part of the base, whether that is a belly, a foot or a column.
  3. Choose a shade whose bottom diameter is roughly equal to or a little wider than the widest part of the base.
  4. Aim for a shade height of about two thirds of the base height, then adjust by eye.
  5. Hold a paper cone or cylinder at the planned size over the lamp to judge the proportions.

Match the Fitter to Your Lamp

The fitter is the metal part that joins shade and lamp. If it does not match, even a handsome shade will sit crooked or not at all.

  • Spider fitters rest on the harp and are held by a small finial on top.
  • Clip-on fitters grip the bulb itself and are common on small accent lamps and chandeliers.
  • Uno fitters sit under the socket and are used on many floor and table lamps with no harp.

Look at your current shade, or at the top of the lamp, to see which system you have before you order anything.

Compare Shapes and Materials

Shape changes how light spreads. Material changes how bright and how warm the glow looks. Use the table as a quick reference.

Choice Effect Works well with
Drum Even light, up and down Modern or simple bases
Empire Soft, angled glow Traditional urn or column bases
Square or rectangular Crisp edges Angular bases and desks
Linen or cotton Warm, diffused Living rooms and bedrooms
Paper or parchment Light, slightly textured Casual rooms
Dark or lined fabric Focused, directed light Reading corners

Check the Room and the Bulb

A lamp beside a sofa is seen from a seated position, so the bottom edge of the shade should sit about at eye level or just below it. That way you see the glow, not the bare bulb. Light shades give more general light, while dark shades give pools of light. Keep the shade a comfortable distance from the bulb, and follow the maker’s guide for the highest bulb wattage the lamp and shade can take. Never let fabric rest against a hot bulb.

FAQ

Can a shade be wider than the base?

Yes. A slightly wider shade often looks balanced, as long as it does not overpower a slim base or sit too close to the wall.

How do I clean a fabric shade?

Unplug the lamp and let it cool. Use a lint roller or a soft brush, and spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap only if the care label allows it.

The Short Version

Measure the base, match the fitter, then choose a shape and material for the kind of light you want. Check the shade height against eye level and follow the bulb limits in the maker’s guide.
