A return pump sends water from a sump back up to the display tank, so its flow and its lift height need to suit the plumbing. Modern DC pumps add a controller that sets the speed, and many include a feed mode that pauses the flow. Flow is quoted in gallons per hour, but the real figure drops as the pump pushes against height.

The six pumps below range from a 185 GPH nano pump to units listed above 2,600 GPH. Flow, lift and sizes come from each product’s listing page. We have not used these pumps ourselves, and noise figures are the makers’ own. Several listings give conflicting sizes, which we note.

Feature Why it matters
Flow The listed maximum is reached only with no lift
Max lift Height from the sump to the tank limits real flow
Controller Speed steps, feed mode and a wave mode add control
Size Check the sump space against the pump body
