How to Choose a Nightstand Height to Suit Your Bed Frame

A nightstand usually works well when its top sits level with the mattress top or a few inches above or below it. Measure your bed from the floor to the top of the mattress, then use that number to decide how tall the table should be. The details below cover the common cases.

Step One: Measure the Bed

Bed frames differ a great deal, so do not assume a standard size. A low platform bed and a tall frame with a thick mattress need very different tables.

  1. Place a tape measure on the floor beside the bed.
  2. Run it up to the top surface of the mattress, pressing the mattress down lightly the way it sits when used.
  3. Write the number down and check it again on the other side.
  4. Note the headboard height too, because a tall table can crowd a low headboard.

Height Targets by Bed Type

These are general guides, not rules. Your arm reach and your habits matter more than any chart.

Bed type Table top goal Why it helps
Low platform bed Level with the mattress, or slightly above Keeps items within easy reach
Standard frame Within a few inches of the mattress top Looks balanced in the room
Tall frame with thick mattress At or just under the mattress top Avoids a table that towers over the bed
Wall-mounted shelf Set to the same level as above Gives you freedom to adjust

Think About How You Use It

Height is only one part of the choice. Ask yourself a few practical questions before you settle on a table.

  • Do you reach for a phone, a glass of water or a book? A top that is too low means bending, and one that is too high means lifting your arm awkwardly.
  • Will a lamp sit on top? Add the lamp height and check that the shade bottom ends up near eye level when you sit up in bed.
  • Do you need drawers? A deeper cabinet may sit taller than an open table, so measure the drawer fronts as well.
  • Is there a window sill, outlet or radiator nearby that limits how tall the piece can be?

Check the Footprint Too

Width and depth deserve a quick look. Leave enough room to walk past and to open the drawers fully. Keep any cord clear of the table legs, and keep a gap behind the table if an outlet sits low on the wall.

FAQ

Do both nightstands need to match?

No. Two different tables can look good together if their tops sit at about the same height and they share a material or tone.

What if my bed is very high?

Choose a table close to mattress height, and consider a small tray on top for items you use often. Avoid stacking items in an unstable way.

The Short Version

Measure from the floor to the mattress top, and aim for a nightstand within a few inches of that level. Then check the lamp height, drawer needs and clearance around the bed.
